Walusimbi made the remarks during a civic education meeting at Lutuula Village in Butuntumula Sub-county, Luweero District, where he sensitised residents about democracy and encouraged them to actively participate in the upcoming village elections.
He cautioned voters against making emotional decisions at the polls, saying electing ineffective leaders could have long-term consequences for community development and residents’ livelihoods.
“Do not be carried away by excitement when choosing your LC1 chairperson. Elect leaders who care about your welfare, protect your land and property, and are committed to developing your village. If you elect the wrong people, you will be the ones to suffer the consequences,” Walusimbi said.
He encouraged residents to exercise their democratic rights peacefully, emphasising that every citizen has the right to participate in leadership regardless of political affiliation.
“Democracy gives everyone an opportunity to participate in leadership. Let us conduct these elections peacefully, without hatred, intimidation, or violence because after the elections we shall continue living together as one community,” he said.
Walusimbi also condemned reports of intimidation targeting residents who support different candidates, warning that such actions undermine peace and the democratic process.
“It is wrong for candidates to intimidate or victimise residents simply because they support another candidate. Such actions divide communities and undermine the democratic process,” he added.
He urged voters to carefully assess candidates before casting their ballots on July 28, saying village leaders should prioritise protecting residents’ rights and property, especially land.
“Choose leaders who will defend your rights and protect your property, especially your land, rather than those who seek personal gain at the expense of the people,” Walusimbi noted.
One of the LC1 chairperson candidates in Lutuula Village, James Matovu, pledged to serve all residents equally if elected.
“If elected, I will serve every resident without discrimination and work with the community to solve the challenges affecting our village,” Matovu said.
Residents who attended the meeting appealed to candidates across Luweero to promote unity, transparency and development, saying they want leaders who can fairly resolve disputes, protect community interests and improve service delivery.
