The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has announced the 2026 Zakat Nisab, setting the minimum qualifying wealth for Muslims required to pay Zakat at Shs2.4 million.
According to the council, any Muslim whose qualifying wealth, including savings, business stock, cash and other eligible assets, reaches or exceeds Shs2.4 million and remains above that threshold for one Islamic lunar year is obligated to pay 2.5 percent of that wealth as Zakat.
Speaking during the announcement, Head of the Zakat and Swadaqa Department at UMSC, Sheikh Abdulbarri Muhammad Kaloozi, said the Nisab was determined based on current market values of gold and silver.
“The gold Nisab is equivalent to 85 grams of gold valued at Shs40,536,500, while the silver Nisab is equivalent to 595 grams of silver valued at Shs2,391,900. Based on these values, the current Zakat Nisab is Shs2,400,000,” Sheikh Kaloozi said.
He explained that Zakat becomes compulsory when a Muslim’s qualifying wealth remains at or above the Nisab for a full lunar year, with the annual contribution fixed at 2.5 percent of the qualifying wealth.
Sheikh Kaloozi emphasized that Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and plays an important role in purifying wealth, strengthening social solidarity and supporting vulnerable members of society.
Quoting the Holy Qur’an (9:103), he said:
“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke blessings upon them.”
He added that Zakat serves both as an act of worship and a mechanism for wealth redistribution, helping promote social justice and compassion within the Muslim community.
Sheikh Kaloozi urged eligible Muslims to fulfil their religious obligation through the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council’s official Zakat collection channels or by depositing their contributions into the UMSC Zakat Account at Diamond Trust Bank.
He also encouraged Muslims who require guidance in calculating or paying Zakat to seek assistance from the Zakat and Swadaqa Department at the UMSC headquarters in Old Kampala.
