Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena has urged Ugandans to participate actively in the upcoming LC1 elections, calling on voters to choose leaders based on character, competence and their ability to serve communities rather than financial influence.
Speaking at the UPC headquarters in Kampala, Akena said the grassroots elections provide citizens with an opportunity to shape the future of their communities and hold local leaders accountable.
He said UPC has fielded candidates across the country and expressed confidence in their ability to serve all Ugandans regardless of political affiliation.
“You should not be paid to vote in your own country. You should not be coerced with money to make a decision. The decision should be made on the basis of how we can make our country better,” Akena said.
The UPC leader challenged voters to carefully assess the character and abilities of candidates, arguing that public office should be viewed as a responsibility to serve citizens rather than advance political interests.
“When you are elected to office, it is to serve all. Any matter that comes before you, deal with it as a national issue,” he added.
Akena acknowledged that many candidates face challenges, including limited resources and political pressure, but encouraged voters to remain committed to exercising their democratic rights.
He said the country’s progress depends on electing leaders who can address community challenges, improve livelihoods and strengthen grassroots governance.
“We have put forward the best which we have, and we stand by our candidates,” he said.
The LC1 elections are expected to attract strong participation from political parties and independent candidates as parties seek to strengthen their grassroots structures ahead of the 2026 electoral cycle.
