The National Unity Platform (NUP) has marked six years since its formation, with Acting President John Baptist Nambeshe honouring supporters who have sacrificed for the party and reaffirming its commitment to its political ideals.
Speaking during anniversary celebrations, Nambeshe thanked religious leaders and supporters who attended the event, describing their presence as a sign of continued backing for the party.
"I thank God for the new responsibility entrusted to me. In a special way, I express my sincere gratitude to our President, Robert Kyagulanyi, for his leadership and for teaching us the values of democracy, freedom and the struggle to build a better Uganda," Nambeshe said.
Nambeshe also paid tribute to former NUP president Dr Lina Zedriga, saying she provided leadership during one of the party's most difficult periods.
He said the sixth anniversary was an opportunity to remember supporters who lost their lives, those in prison and others facing legal challenges.
"As we commemorate the sixth anniversary of the National Unity Platform, we honour all those who have sacrificed for the cause of our party. We have comrades who lost their lives, others who remain in prison, and some who continue to be detained without trial," he said.
The NUP acting president called for unity among supporters, arguing that determination for freedom cannot be defeated through intimidation or pressure.
"History has taught us time and again that no force has ever defeated a people who are determined to be free. No dictatorship, no scheme and no plot designed to trap or intimidate us will succeed," Nambeshe said.
He defended the absence of NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, commonly known as Bobi Wine, saying physical distance would not weaken the party's message.
"No amount of distance and no amount of intimidation can silence the ideals of a movement. A movement is like a spirit. Our movement began as People Power and remains rooted in the power of the people. It is a cause, and no one can imprison a cause," he said.
The anniversary event comes as NUP reflects on its journey since unveiling its political platform in July 2020, with party leaders pledging to continue mobilising supporters across the country.
