The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and Chancellor of Uganda Christian University (UCU), The Most Rev Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has urged graduates to embrace peacebuilding, integrity and servant leadership as they enter the workforce.
He made the call on Friday while presiding over the 26th Graduation Ceremony (Part 3) at Bishop Barham University College (BBUC) in Kabale.
The ceremony, attended by Guest of Honour Eng. Reuben Tumwebaze Byaruhanga, Managing Director of Uganda Clays Limited, saw 353 students graduate, including 228 males (65%) and 125 females (35%), across Masters, Bachelor’s and Diploma programmes.
The late Rt. Rev. Dr. George William Tibeesigwa, former Bishop of Ankole Diocese, Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda, and the first Principal of BBUC, was honoured posthumously for his visionary leadership, integrity and excellence.
Speaking against the backdrop of Uganda’s upcoming elections, Archbishop Kaziimba reminded graduates of their responsibility as ambassadors of peace, justice and reconciliation.
He encouraged them to speak words that heal, not divide, and to foster unity rather than hatred.
Drawing inspiration from Nehemiah 2:20, he said: “Like Nehemiah, you have built something meaningful, brick by brick, through prayer, discipline, and resilience. May that same spirit propel you as you step into your next chapter to rebuild communities, restore hope, and lead with integrity.”
The Chief Guest, Eng. Tumwebaze, encouraged graduates to embrace innovation in a rapidly changing world.
He highlighted the importance of carbon intelligence, virtual intelligence and artificial intelligence, urging graduates to think critically and responsibly.
He emphasized integrity in workplaces, particularly in remote settings, and cautioned against gender stereotypes in the job market.
Representing the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Rev Prof John Kitayimbwa, noted that UCU staff members are undertaking further studies and have recently been recognised for outstanding research.
He highlighted the University Transformation Initiative, which has made UCU and its constituent colleges dustless, paperless and environmentally friendly.
Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, Bishop of Kigezi Diocese and Chairman of the University College Governing Council, urged graduates to uphold integrity, humility, servant leadership and excellence, reminding them that great achievements often begin with humble beginnings.
College Principal Dr. Alice Tumwesigye reaffirmed that BBUC produces graduates who are spiritually grounded, academically competent and environmentally conscious.
She described the campus as one of the most beautiful and environmentally friendly in Uganda and noted the university’s strides in science education.
The graduation ceremony was also attended by Rev. Canon William Ongeng, Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda and UCU University Council member.
