Services on the MV Kalangala have resumed following emergency engine repairs, restoring the main transport link between Entebbe–Nakiwogo and Kalangala–Lutoboka after a brief suspension that had disrupted travel for island residents, traders and tourists.
The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the full resumption of MV Kalangala operations, ending a temporary halt caused by mechanical faults.
In a notice issued on December 5, 2025, Permanent Secretary Bageya Waiswa confirmed that the vessel is back in service after engineers completed urgent repairs on its engines.
“The vessel has been restored to safe and normal operating condition and is fully operational,” he said.
“The general public and users of MV Kalangala Ferry may now proceed to use the ferry as scheduled.”
The ferry was suspended a day earlier after officials reported engine problems requiring immediate intervention.
At the time, Mr Waiswa said the ministry’s technical team had embarked on emergency work to return the vessel to safe operating condition.
MV Kalangala remains a vital transport link for residents, traders, health workers and tourists moving between the mainland and Kalangala District.
The route plays a central role in supporting tourism, the movement of goods and access to essential services across Lake Victoria.
During the temporary suspension, the ministry advised travellers to use alternative vessels, including MV Ssesse and MV Rafiki, which operate on the Bukakata–Luuku and Nakiwogo–Lutoboka routes.
With repairs completed, officials thanked the public for their patience.
Mr Waiswa said the return of MV Kalangala is expected to ease travel pressure and restore normal movement for island communities and businesses as the festive season approaches.
