The High Court will on July 30, 2026, deliver its ruling on the bail application of lawyer and politician Erias Lukwago, after his defence team asked for his release on grounds including concerns over his health.
The bail hearing was conducted from Judge David Matovu’s chambers, with only Lukwago’s wife Zawedde, his lawyers and proposed sureties allowed to attend the proceedings.
The defence presented four sureties alongside Lukwago’s personal guarantee that he would appear in court whenever required.
Speaking after the session, defence lawyer Medard Lubega Sseggona said the defence had met all requirements for the bail application.
“We introduced four sureties that came to stand for him, in addition to his personal guarantee of attending court as and when it is required,” Sseggona said.
The defence and prosecution agreed on a schedule for filing written submissions before the judge delivers his decision electronically on July 30.
Sseggona said the defence also raised concerns about Lukwago’s health while in custody and asked court to allow him to access treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
However, the court directed prison authorities to consult medical personnel and ensure Lukwago receives the necessary care while in custody.
“We did apply to go to Mulago, but the court did not make those orders and left it to the prison authorities to do what is required in the circumstances after consulting the medical team,” Sseggona said.
The lawyer said prison facilities remain limited in providing specialised medical care due to inadequate personnel and equipment.
He added that while physiotherapy could help manage Lukwago’s pain, it would not address his broader medical needs.
The bail application follows Lukwago’s committal to the High Court to face trial over charges related to misprision of treason. His defence has previously cited his medical condition as a reason for seeking temporary release.
