The Secretary General of the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU), Joshua Kitakule, has appealed to the Government of South Korea to release Shincheonji Church of Jesus Chairman Lee Man-hee, arguing that his continued detention undermines the principles of due process, justice and global peace-building.
In a letter dated July 14, 2026, addressed to the Government of the Republic of South Korea, Kitakule, who also serves as a Peace Ambassador with Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), called on the authorities to ensure that Lee's case is handled fairly, transparently and in accordance with the rule of law.
Kitakule acknowledged that Lee was arrested in connection with election-related allegations but stressed that any concerns over his conduct should be addressed through an impartial judicial process.
"In any democratic society, justice must be pursued through transparent and impartial due process. Mistakes or misjudgements, if they occurred, should be addressed within the framework of law, not through measures that risk appearing politically motivated or disproportionate," Kitakule wrote.
He described Lee as a global religious leader whose peace initiatives have brought together diverse communities and promoted dialogue across national, cultural and religious boundaries.
According to Kitakule, Lee's detention not only limits his personal liberty but also hampers the peace-building efforts he has championed for decades.
"Releasing Chairman Lee would demonstrate a commitment to justice and compassion, while allowing him to continue his invaluable work in fostering unity and understanding among peoples," he said.
The IRCU Secretary General further argued that no individual should face disproportionate punishment or prolonged detention without fair and transparent legal proceedings, noting that Lee has consistently advocated for peace and reconciliation despite his advanced age.
He urged the South Korean government to uphold human rights and ensure that justice is administered with fairness and dignity.
"At a time when division and conflict persist globally, the world needs voices of peace. May this appeal be received in the spirit of goodwill and contribute to a resolution that honours both the principles of democracy and the values of humanity," Kitakule noted
The appeal comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving Lee Man-hee in South Korea, with Kitakule expressing hope that the matter will be resolved in a manner consistent with democratic principles and respect for human rights.
