KAMPALA — The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has started a 15-day training programme for 80 data collectors ahead of the Ninth Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) 2026/2027.
The training, being held at Kabira Country Club in Kampala, is aimed at equipping participants with technical knowledge and practical skills before they are deployed for nationwide field data collection.
While opening the training, UBOS Executive Director Dr Chris Mukiza congratulated the participants for successfully going through a competitive recruitment process, saying they had been selected to support the quality of Uganda’s statistical production.
He urged the trainees to take the exercise seriously and understand both the survey tools and the importance of the information they will collect from households.
Dr Mukiza warned that officers who fail to meet the required standards could be excluded from future statistical assignments organised by the Bureau.
“If you do not do a good job during data collection, then you have deviated from the main purpose of this survey,” Dr Mukiza said.
He emphasised that the credibility of official statistics depends largely on the accuracy and reliability of information collected in the field.
According to Mukiza, quality data is essential for effective national planning, policy formulation and decision-making.
After the training, UBOS will conduct field testing to assess the effectiveness of the survey tools and procedures, as well as determine whether the data collectors are adequately prepared for the main exercise.
The Uganda National Household Survey collects information on key socio-economic indicators, including education, health, housing conditions and food security.
The findings are used to assess poverty levels, monitor socio-economic trends, measure household welfare and support evidence-based government interventions.
The survey also contributes to tracking progress on national development priorities and international development commitments.
UBOS released findings from the Eighth Uganda National Household Survey in May 2025, providing insights into the country’s socio-economic conditions.
The ninth survey round is expected to generate updated statistics to support government programmes and guide future development planning.
