The Minister for Gender, Culture and Social Development Gen. Henry Tumukunde has pledged Government support to strengthen Uganda’s cultural and creative sector after making his maiden official visit to the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC).
Gen. Tumukunde visited the centre on Tuesday, where he met with its leadership to familiarise himself with its operations and discuss its role in preserving and promoting Uganda’s cultural heritage.
He was received by the UNCC Board of Trustees Chairperson Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum, alongside Vice Chairperson Phina Mugerwa and board members Dr. Richard Komakech and Hannington Bugingo.
“I was warmly received by the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum, alongside the Vice Chairperson, Ms Phina Mugerwa, and Board Members Dr Richard Komakech and Mr Hannington Bugingo,” Gen. Tumukunde said.
The Minister said the engagement provided an opportunity to understand the Centre’s operations, priorities and challenges as Government seeks to strengthen the cultural sector.
“Today, I made my maiden official visit to the Uganda National Cultural Centre (@UNCC_UG), where I met with the Centre’s leadership to familiarise myself with its operations and discuss its role in promoting Uganda’s rich cultural heritage,” he said.
Gen. Tumukunde said discussions with the Centre’s leadership would inform future collaboration aimed at unlocking the potential of Uganda’s cultural and creative industries.
“The visit provided an opportunity to gain firsthand insight into the Centre’s work, discuss its priorities and challenges, and begin charting a shared path towards strengthening Uganda’s cultural and creative sector,” he said.
“I look forward to working closely with the Board, management and all stakeholders to advance the Centre’s mandate and unlock its full potential,” he added.
The Uganda National Cultural Centre is the Government institution responsible for promoting, preserving and developing Uganda’s performing arts, literature and other forms of cultural expression.
The visit comes as Government seeks to position the creative industry as a contributor to tourism, employment creation and the preservation of national identity.
