Mayiga Rallies Omutima Clan Members Behind Shs  Billion Kampala Headquarters Project

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged Buganda clans to prioritise structured development programmes that directly improve the welfare of their members and secure long-term benefits for future generations.

He made the remarks on Tuesday at the Kingdom headquarters in Bulange, Mengo, while addressing journalists during the unveiling of development plans by the Omutima Clan, to which he belongs, where he also serves as Senior Advisor.

The Omutima Clan, under its Clan Head (Omutaka Namugera Kakeeto) Dr Nicholas Kasekende, has launched plans to construct a permanent clan headquarters in Kampala as part of efforts to strengthen administration and improve service delivery to clan members.

The proposed facility, planned for construction on clan land in Mutundwe, is expected to host administrative offices, meeting halls and multipurpose spaces for clan activities and gatherings.

Mayiga said he was honoured when the Clan Head appointed him Senior Advisor, noting that the leadership quickly agreed on the need to strengthen the clan’s organisational structure and development agenda.

“I was very pleased when my clan head, Namugera Kakeeto, appointed me to serve as the Senior Advisor of our Omutima Clan. I requested the Clan Head to convene a meeting at the Butikkiro so that together we could discuss how to develop our clan,” he said.

He added that one of the key gaps identified was the absence of a permanent headquarters in Kampala where members can easily access clan services, despite the clan owning land in Makindye.

The discussions, he said, culminated in a decision to mobilise funds for the project, with each participating member expected to contribute at least Shs 1 million towards the construction of the headquarters.

Mayiga announced that a major fundraising meeting will be held on July 18, 2026, at the Butikkiro in Mengo.

“I have written invitation letters to a number of people to attend this meeting, and everyone invited is expected to contribute one million shillings. However, there are many people whom I was unable to reach with invitation letters, and anyone who is able to contribute one million shillings on that day will be welcomed,” he said.

“Those who cannot raise the full amount will be able to submit whatever contribution they have through the Clan Treasurer so they can also support this project.”

He encouraged clan members, relatives and women married into the Omutima Clan to participate in the initiative, saying similar development efforts are being pursued by other Buganda clans in line with the Kingdom’s broader development agenda.

Mayiga also reiterated the Kabaka’s directive requiring all clans to establish functional leadership structures, noting that strong governance is key to achieving sustainable development within clan systems.

He said the project, estimated to cost over Shs1 billion, will begin with funds raised from the initial mobilisation drive.

The planned headquarters is expected to serve as the central administrative and coordination hub for the Omutima Clan, supporting its activities and long-term development programmes.
