The Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday adjourned proceedings in the case against former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago after prison authorities informed the court that his deteriorating health made it unsafe to present him in court.

Presiding Magistrate Sarah Ann Basemera told the court that officials from the facility where Lukwago is being held had written indicating that his medical condition had worsened.

The letter stated that transporting him to court and requiring him to appear in the dock would pose a serious risk to his health.

Lukwago is facing charges of allegedly failing to report information about a purported plot to overthrow the government. He has denied the allegations.

His absence drew concern from relatives, friends and members of his legal team who had gathered at the Makindye court expecting the matter to proceed.

Speaking after the session, Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, confirmed that he had visited his client and described his condition as worrying.

Sseggona said specialist doctors had been assigned to examine and manage Lukwago’s treatment.

He appealed to the public to keep Lukwago in their prayers as he receives medical care and thanked supporters for standing with the family during what he described as a difficult period.

The court adjourned the matter to July 7, when it is expected to review Lukwago’s health status before deciding how the case will proceed.

The latest adjournment comes after the court previously declined Lukwago’s application for bail.
