Presidential hopeful Nathan Nandala Mafabi has pledged to reduce taxes on basic household commodities and implement large-scale poverty-alleviation programs if elected president.
Speaking on Tuesday while campaigning in Ibanda District, Mafabi highlighted the growing economic burden on ordinary Ugandans due to high taxes on essentials such as sugar and bar soap.
“The taxes on basic household items are too high. Things like sugar and bar soap have become a burden to the ordinary Ugandan. If elected, we shall reduce these taxes so that people can spend less on essentials and retain more income for their families’ well-being,” he said.
On poverty reduction, Mafabi proposed an annual grant of 100 million shillings for every village, aimed at supporting income-generating activities and improving livelihoods at the grassroots level.
“Each village will receive shs100 million every year to support productive activities and empower households economically,” he said, emphasizing community-led development as a key strategy to combat poverty.
Mafabi also committed to introducing free meals for school-going children, citing hunger as a major factor behind school dropouts, especially in rural areas.
“No child should drop out of school because of hunger. Providing meals in schools will keep children in class and allow them to concentrate on their studies,” he added.
He stressed that education and economic empowerment are central to his vision for national development, arguing that sustainable progress requires financially stable households and well-nourished, educated children.
