Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has formally committed a third suspect to the High Court for trial in connection with a violent daylight robbery that occurred last year at Esso Corner along Jinja Road, Kampala—an incident widely circulated after being captured on CCTV.
On Friday, Ibra Kasozi, also known as Kisenyi, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi, ending months during which prosecutors said he had been evading arrest while his co-accused had already been sent for trial.
Magistrate Kayizzi informed Kasozi that the lower court no longer had jurisdiction over the matter.
“You are hereby committed to the High Court for trial at the next court session. This indictment will help you in preparing your defence,” Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi
Kasozi now joins Mubarak Sharayimu alias Musiramu Mundari and Sharif Bbaale alias TMS Boss/Maddi, who were earlier committed. All three face a charge of aggravated robbery, contrary to Sections 266 and 267(2) of the Penal Code Act.
According to the indictment, the suspects—along with others still at large—are accused of staging a coordinated attack on July 15, 2024, at the busy Esso Corner junction.
The victim, Joshi Keshav, was riding to work on a boda boda from his home in Bukoto while carrying a laptop bag containing an HP laptop, Shs 150,000, and other personal items valued at approximately Shs 2.5 million.
As traffic slowed around midday, a group of about twelve men riding on multiple motorcycles approached the junction. Prosecutors state that after spotting the complainant, Kasozi allegedly directed the group toward him. During the attack, the victim’s laptop bag was taken while other members of the group reportedly formed a barrier around the spot. Keshav later reported the matter at Nkurumah Road Police Station.
Later that same day, police received information about another robbery believed to involve the same group along Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road. One alleged member of the group was killed by a mob in a separate incident.
CCTV footage from different locations played a critical role in identifying the suspects. Investigators traced a purple Haojue motorcycle, registration UDG 931Q, seen in the footage, to Eagle General Traders Ltd.
The motorcycle had been issued under an asset-financing arrangement to Namulondo Hanifah, and tracking data later placed it at Lugoba Police Post in Kawempe, where it had been impounded.
Medical forms indicate the victim sustained injuries that were classified as harm.
Police arrested Sharayimu first on July 16; he reportedly admitted to participating. Bbaale denied involvement, while Kasozi is said to have confessed after his arrest.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) intends to present medical records, photographs, charge-and-caution statements, CCTV-derived evidence, and the motorcycle profile report during trial.
The DPP maintains that the evidence will demonstrate the full involvement of the accused persons.
Kasozi will now remain on remand as he awaits the next High Court criminal session, during which he is expected to enter a plea.
