Katikkiro Mayiga Urges Buganda Youth to Engage in Leadership and Development

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on the youth of Buganda to actively participate in leadership and governance within both the Kingdom and government structures, emphasizing that such engagement empowers them to advocate for their interests and contribute meaningfully to their generation’s progress.

The message was delivered by the Second Deputy Katikkiro and Minister for Finance and Planning, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, during the 2025 Buganda Youth Day celebrations held at the Lubiri, Mengo. This year’s theme was “Youth Contribution to Development.”

Reflecting on the 15 years since Kabaka Mutebi II began formally recognizing youth through an annual celebration, Mayiga praised young people for using the platform to showcase their achievements, reflect on past experiences, and plan for the future.

Mayiga stressed the importance of youth taking personal responsibility for progress through civic, community, and governmental engagement.

“Youth must understand that they have a responsibility to improve their lives through various channels of engagement and service to the community and government. By doing so, they can transform their circumstances. We encourage you to increase the quality and impact of your efforts and to leverage technology for innovation,” he said.

He also commended the youth for organized initiatives, urging continuous improvement and proper use of traditional systems like Fissa, Tereka, Siga, and SACCOs such as Essuubiryo Zambogo, CBS PEWOSA, and Buladde.

Mayiga further encouraged youth to participate responsibly in politics, avoiding violence and conflict, and to respect Buganda’s traditions and values.
