The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged politicians to prioritize forgiveness and reconciliation in order to heal the country from political divisions and conflicts arising from politics.
This message was delivered on his behalf by the Minister of Information, Mobilization and Kingdom Spokesperson, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, while receiving a Shs 29 million contribution (oluwalo) collected from the counties of Butambala, Kyaggwe, and Buddu, which was presented at the Kingdom headquarters in Bulange, Mengo on Tuesday.
The Katikkiro emphasized Kabaka Mutebi’s recent Eid message where he highlighted the importance of forgiveness among politicians.
He noted that this call stems from elections, which often create divisions among the people of Buganda.
“His Majesty the Kabaka, in his Eid-Adhuha message, expressed joy for those who returned from pilgrimage and noted that developed nations prioritize forgiveness. He also condemned corruption and greed among modern-day politicians, urging them to emulate developed countries in how they conduct public affairs,” the message read.
On his part, Kazibwe said that under the Kingdom’s development agenda, great emphasis is being placed on coffee farming. He called upon all farmers to improve the quality of their coffee by following the proper guidelines set to ensure better production.
He explained that value-added coffee enables farmers to earn more income, which helps them improve healthcare, education, housing, talent development, and other aspects aimed at transforming the lives of the Kabaka’s subjects.
Kazibwe also informed attendees about the 33rd coronation anniversary celebrations of the Kabaka, which are set to take place at Watoto Church, urging the public to follow all planned arrangements in order to uphold the dignity of the Nnamulondo.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Local Government, Kingdom Tours, and Buganda affairs abroad, Joseph Kawuki, the Chief of Butambala, Katambala Hajj Sulaiman Magala, praised the initiative of involving young children in the oluwalo program, saying it helps them learn from elders how they serve the Kabaka.
Butambala County Member of Parliament, Eriasa Mukiibi Sserunjogi, commended the Kingdom’s initiatives, noting that the leadership of the Buganda Kingdom remains steady and continues to provide direction to the Kabaka’s subjects. He pledged to remain committed to initiatives such as “Mwanyi Terimba” (Coffee Value Chain Development).
He further appealed to the Kingdom to help facilitate dialogue among politicians from all sides in order to resolve challenges and achieve progress.
The oluwalo event was attended by members of the Buganda Lukiiko (Parliament), schools from the three counties, beauty groups from Kyaddondo, Butambala, and Kyaggwe, as well as various community members.
Sub-counties from the different counties contributed as follows: Butambala recorded Shs3 million, from Ssaabaddu Ngando and Shs 5.5 million from Ssaabawaali Bulo; Buddu recorded Shs7 million from Mutuba VIII Kasaali and Shs 3.4 million from Mutuba IX Kabira; and Kyaggwe recorded Shs3million from Musaale Nagojje and Shs 7.8 million from Mutuba IV Kawuga, bringing the overall total contribution to Shs 29.87 million.
