President Yoweri Museveni has named a new unit to help fight corruption in Uganda despite the existence of the Inspectorate of Government (IGG). The office of the IGG is headed by Justice Irene Mulyagonja.
President Museveni made the announcement during his 2018 State of the Nation address to parliament in Kampala today.
The unit will be led by Mr. James Tweheyo, Ms. Martha Asiimwe and Sister Akiror.
President Museveni said the members of the unit have been directed to provide their phone numbers to the public. The public will be encouraged to report any corruption cases that come to their attention to the unit.
While making the announcement, President Museveni turned on the office of the IGG and accused it of incompetence.
Speaking off the cuff, President Museveni wondered, “What happened to the IGG? Why don’t the victims of corruption report those incidents to the office of the IGG? That was the purpose of that office; to protect the public from corrupt officials; to protect the investors against corrupt officials. The IGG should reflect on this. Are her staff credible? Why does the public not trust that institution? We need answers.”
