Chief Justice breaks ground for building to house Supreme Court, Court of Appeal

The judiciary hopes to save over Shs 6 billions in rent every year once their multibillion complex that will house the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal is complete.

While breaking the ground for the new building, the Chief Justice Bart Katureebe said the judiciary spends billions of shillings in rent every year because it has no permanent home.

The new building will be erected next to the High Court building and will take two years to complete. It will cost Shs 63 billion.

"How can we have a court of appeal in the same building where there is a bank and a bar?" Katureebe wondered.

Court of Appeal is currently located at Twed in Nakasero.

"How can we continue to pay six billion every year for the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal yet sometimes the ministry of Finance fails to pay and we pay penalties."

It’s here that Katureebe narrated the challenges they have faced since 1928 when the high court was constructed.

He said the court staff, inmates and the public have been sharing the same corridors, which puts their life at risk.

The Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwine said that although they have many needs as judiciary, they have tried to walk the talk.

"I know we have got many things on our plate to work on but it's good to have something like this in the pipeline," he said.
