From Crowns to Causes: How Uganda’s Beauty Queens Are Redefining Pageantry

For decades, beauty pageants were often viewed as competitions centred primarily on physical appearance.

Today, however, Uganda’s pageantry industry has evolved into a platform for advocacy, leadership, tourism promotion, and social impact, producing women who are increasingly making their mark on the global stage.

Over the years, Uganda’s beauty queens have used their platforms to champion social causes, represent the country internationally, and inspire young women to pursue leadership and community service.

One of the country's most significant pageant milestones came in 2018 when Quiin Abenakyo made history by being crowned Miss World Africa at the Miss World competition in China. She became the first Ugandan to win a continental title at the prestigious pageant, placing Uganda firmly on the global pageantry map and inspiring a new generation of contestants.

Uganda’s momentum at international pageants has continued to grow. In 2024, Hannah Karema Tumukunde delivered one of the country's strongest performances at the Miss World competition in India.

She won the Africa Beauty With a Purpose Award, finished among the Top 8 contestants globally, and was named First Runner-Up Miss World Africa for her humanitarian project aimed at empowering vulnerable women and girls.

The following year, Natasha Nyonyozi maintained Uganda’s impressive trajectory by winning the Africa Beauty With a Purpose Award at Miss World 2025. Her advocacy focused on autism awareness and inclusion, further highlighting Uganda’s growing reputation for purpose-driven pageantry.

Uganda’s current titleholder, Trivia Elle Muhoza, who was crowned Miss Uganda 2025/26, is expected to represent the country at the upcoming Miss World competition scheduled for September 5, 2026, in Vietnam.

The event, which marks the 73rd edition of the global pageant, is expected to attract contestants from more than 100 countries, offering Uganda another opportunity to compete for its first Miss World crown.

Uganda’s pageantry journey has also been shaped by several notable queens, including Oliver Nakakande, Leah Kagasa, Stella Nantumbwe, and Elizabeth Bagaya, all of whom have used their platforms to advocate for social causes while promoting Uganda’s image internationally.

Beyond Miss World, Uganda is preparing for another milestone with the inaugural Miss Universe Uganda competition. The national contest will select the country's representative for the Miss Universe pageant, one of the world’s most recognised beauty competitions.

The Miss Universe 2026 competition is scheduled to take place in November in Puerto Rico, and the newly established national franchise has already attracted contestants from across Uganda, signalling growing interest in international pageantry.

Industry observers note that modern beauty pageants are increasingly being judged not only on appearance but also on leadership, intelligence, advocacy, and community impact. As a result, contestants are using their platforms to address issues ranging from education and health to disability inclusion and women's empowerment.

As Uganda continues to register strong performances at international competitions, the country’s beauty queens are demonstrating that pageantry has become much more than a contest of beauty. It is increasingly serving as a platform for national representation, social change, and global engagement.

With a new generation of contestants preparing to take on the world stage, hopes remain high that Uganda’s long-awaited breakthrough at the highest levels of international pageantry may be within reach.
