Archbishop Kaziimba Urges Clergy with Political Ambitions to Resign
Archbishop Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu has told Church of Uganda clergy and officials with political ambitions to resign their positions before seeking office, stressing that doctrine forbids partisan involvement while holding ecclesiastical roles.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, has asked all clergy and other church officials harbouring political ambitions to step down from their positions before joining active politics.

He made the remarks while preaching to clergy during the All Clergy Conference 2025 at Uganda Christian University in Mukono.

The gathering has brought together ministers from all 39 dioceses that make up the Church of Uganda.

Archbishop Kaziimba reminded the gathering that church doctrine does not allow participation in partisan politics, stressing that ministers must resign before pursuing political office.

He further warned that without strong spiritual leadership, the church risks being overshadowed.

“Church titles and positions are meaningless unless leaders are guided by a good and faithful shepherd,” he told the conference.

The Archbishop also encouraged Ugandans to embrace unity, peace, and reconciliation as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.

He noted that politics is seasonal, but brotherhood and love remain permanent.

In his message to voters, Kaziimba urged citizens to prepare well and participate responsibly in next year’s polls, while also appealing to the Electoral Commission to ensure transparency, truth, and fairness throughout the process.

On his part, Prof Aaron Mushengyezi, Vice Chancellor of Uganda Christian University, called upon the clergy to recognize the need for transformed ministers.

He urged them to embrace change within their places of service so they can, in turn, transform the communities they lead.
