Hospitality Managers Call for More Investment in Professionals to Boost Uganda’s Tourism Competitiveness
The Hotel General Managers Association of Uganda has urged increased investment in hospitality professionals, saying improved skills, recognition and inclusion of local experts are critical for Uganda to compete in the global tourism industry.

The Hotel General Managers Association of Uganda (HOGMAU) has called for greater investment in hospitality professionals, arguing that Uganda’s tourism industry can only achieve global competitiveness if local managers are equipped with the skills, recognition and opportunities needed to lead the sector.

Speaking during a HOGMAU event, the association’s president, David Mayega Harry, said the organisation was created to promote professional growth among hospitality leaders and ensure industry experts play a central role in shaping Uganda’s tourism future.

“HOGMA is not and shall never be a pressure group. Our cry is basic and clear. We need inclusion, we need to be paid attention to, and we need to improve. Our managers need to be valued so that they become valuable,” Mayega said.

He said Ugandan hospitality professionals have the experience and potential to manage world-class hotels but require continuous training, exposure to international standards and stronger recognition from industry players.

Mayega also challenged expatriate hotel managers working in Uganda to mentor local professionals and transfer knowledge to ensure sustainable growth of the sector.

He revealed that HOGMAU has developed a five-year strategic plan aimed at strengthening the capacity of hospitality workers and improving Uganda’s competitiveness in the global tourism market.

The plan was developed with support from partners including Mastercard, UNICEF, the European Union and Makerere University Business School.

“We want capacity building. We want to be better. Do not keep training people when, for us, you should nurture those already in the field because we are hands-on experts. We are ready to help shape the future of Uganda’s tourism industry,” Mayega said.

He said Uganda’s reputation as one of the world’s most hospitable countries must be matched with quality service delivery and professional excellence if the country is to attract more international visitors.

Mayega said strengthening the skills of hospitality managers would not only improve service standards but also increase Uganda’s ability to compete for investment and visitors within the global tourism market.

He further encouraged hotel workers, suppliers, farmers and other stakeholders across the hospitality value chain to join HOGMAU, saying stronger collaboration and professional development would help transform the sector.

The association said building a skilled and empowered hospitality workforce remains essential as Uganda seeks to expand tourism revenues and position itself as a leading destination in Africa.
