Residents of Mityana District from across the political spectrum have expressed strong support for their Woman MP, Joyce Bagala, urging her not to abandon them after being denied the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket ahead of the 2026 elections.
Large groups of supporters flocked to Bagala’s home in Mbaliga, Mityana District, to show solidarity and encourage her to contest again, even without a party flag.
Residents argued that Bagala’s record of service, accessibility, and fearless representation in Parliament outweighs party politics.
“We came here not as NUP, NRM, or FDC members, but as people of Mityana who believe in Joyce Bagala. Whether she has a card or not, she is still our voice. We cannot let her step aside,” said Isaac Ssemugabi, one of Bagala’s supporters.
Bagala, who defeated Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba of the ruling NRM in the 2021 elections, has been one of NUP’s strongest figures in the Greater Mubende sub-region.
Her loss of the party card to Proscovia Nabbosa Mukisa has sparked debate, with many fearing it could weaken NUP’s position in the area.
A women’s group leader added, “Joyce has been with us in every struggle. She has supported women and young people in Mityana. We are telling her not to let politics of cards push her away from us.”
In response, Bagala thanked her supporters and promised to consult widely before deciding her next move.
“I hear you, and I see the love you have for me. Leadership is not about the color of the card but about the people we serve. I will take time to reflect and make the right decision together with you,” she said.
Political analysts say NUP’s decision could create internal divisions or give the ruling party an opportunity to reclaim the seat. Despite this, Bagala’s grassroots support remains a formidable force in Mityana politics.
