David Musiri, a parliamentary aspirant for Makindye West, has petitioned the National Unity Platform (NUP) tribunal, challenging the party’s decision to award the constituency flag to Zahra Luyirika.
Musiri argued that Luyirika, who had initially aimed to contest the Kampala Woman MP seat, unfairly shifted her bid to Makindye West, sidelining long-serving party members.
“I feel betrayed as a loyal member who has stood with the party through thick and thin. This move undermines those of us who have invested time and energy in strengthening NUP at the grassroots,” Musiri said while submitting his petition on Wednesday.
The petition follows widespread discontent among NUP supporters after the party released its list of flagbearers for the 2026 parliamentary elections.
Several incumbents and loyalists, including MPs who expected to retain the card, were left out, sparking protests and grievances over alleged unfairness and political influence in the selection process.
Youthful aspirants who have been active in mobilization, along with some sitting MPs, have also filed petitions with the NUP tribunal seeking redress.
Party officials say the hearings, which began after the flagbearer announcement earlier this week, will conclude tomorrow, with final decisions on disputed constituencies to follow.
The outcome of Musiri’s petition and others will be crucial in determining whether the party can resolve internal divisions and unify ahead of its 2026 campaign strategy.
