ADJUMANI — Second Deputy Prime Minister Gen Moses Ali, 84, has officially launched his re-election campaign for Adjumani West County, pledging to prioritise infrastructure development, healthcare access, and basic services for rural communities.
The launch, coupled with a thanksgiving ceremony, took place Thursday afternoon at Paridi Stadium in Adjumani Town Council.
Gen Ali, a veteran politician and historical member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), is seeking to retain his seat in Parliament in the 2026 elections.
His manifesto outlines several key priorities, including the construction of a Health Centre IV, fast-tracking the long-awaited Laropi Bridge across the River Nile, tarmacking the Laropi–Moyo–Afoji road, improving electricity supply, and expanding access to clean water in hard-to-reach areas.
Supporters gathered in large numbers at Paridi Stadium after a tightly-guarded procession through Adjumani Town, which saw the General driven from Aragan Hotel Limited to the launch venue. Dressed in an NRM yellow shirt, Gen Ali remained inside his vehicle throughout the procession, citing health challenges that have limited his public appearances.
Speaking on his behalf, Gabu Amacha, his political assistant and head of the campaign task force, acknowledged the General’s declining health but reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to serve.
“Gen. Moses Ali is not in the best health condition to speak clearly to the public, but he is still determined to serve the people of Adjumani West County,” Amacha said.
“His commitment is unshaken. His vision is clear.”
NRM District Chairperson Charles Akuku Anzo used the platform to call for mature and peaceful campaigns as the party heads into its primaries.
“Let’s avoid personal attacks and tribal sentiments. We want a campaign based on ideas, not insults,” Anzo urged.
While some critics have questioned Gen Ali’s advanced age and health, youthful supporters at the rally stood firmly behind his candidacy.
“Age is just a number. Gen. Moses Ali has served this constituency faithfully. He is honest and development-minded,” said Amanya Abdu, a resident of Adjumani Town Council.
Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, who also attended the event, praised Gen Ali as a national icon whose contributions to peace and stability in Uganda remain deeply significant.
“Gen. Moses Ali is a national hero. Uganda is peaceful today because of leaders like him,” said Balaam. “Young people should stop mocking the elderly. Instead, they should sit with them and learn. Elders are a reservoir of wisdom.”
Gen Ali is expected to face stiff competition in the NRM primaries, with three other contenders—Santos Adrawa, Moses Kibrai, and Nixon Owole—already eyeing the Adjumani West seat.
Despite health concerns, his campaign machinery appears fully active, and his decades of experience in national politics continue to anchor his appeal among loyal voters.
