The ruling National Resistance Movement has named a 25- man team that will spearhead campaigns to canvass votes for President Museveni in the forthcoming 2021 elections.
At a function held at Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala, the NRM vice chairman in charge of the Central region, Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi was appointed to head the team, deputized by Singh Katongole whereas Raphael Magyezi will be in charge of finance.
Others are Faridah Kibowa and Deborah Kinobe(women desk), Rogers Mulindwa(General Secretary), Shafiq Mwanje(People with disability), Ibrahim Kitatta, Bulegeya Rogers and Agnes Kirabo( youth desk), Titus Kiwanuka(veterans) and Godfrey Kirumira ( business community) .
Speaking at the function, minister Kiwanda said the team will ensure Museveni gets a landslide win in the forthcoming election in Buganda.
“Our target is to win with 70 or 80% in Buganda. We will campaign for the president in a scientific way and on community radios in the villages. We will have the president speak from Nakasero but relay his speech live from the community radios in villages,”Kiwanda said.
The NRM has of late faced stiff competition from the opposition especially in Buganda and with the emergency of National Unity Platform’s Robert Kyagulanyi, competition is expected to increase since he seems to have an appeal to youths, who are the majority.
Speaking on Saturday, Kiwanda said the taskforce named Buganda for Museveni will work towards ensuring youths are lured into supporting the incumbent.
“We need to come out as a party taskforce to go out to the district, parishes and villages and explain to the young people that NRM is friendly to them and they are a product of the party. NRM is one of the friendliest parties. It is very friendly to young people. People think young people are a problem to the NRM which is not true,”Kiwanda said.
On some of the party members who have since decided to run as independents in the forthcoming elections after losing in the primaries, Kiwanda said reconciliation will be top on the taskforce’s agenda.
“Some people have genuine reasons (for running as independents) as they feel they were not treated well. In some parts, the problem is on our candidates that when they won in primaries, they became so proud thinking they have made it. We need to talk to them because reconciliation is not one-sided. Our team is going to move to every district for reconciliation,” he said.
