The High court in Kampala yesterday sentenced three people, including two women, to 17 years in prison after they were found guilty of serving food laced with chloroform to a boda boda rider before stealing his motorcycle.

Justice Wilson Kwesigwa, the head of Criminal Division of the High Court found Joweria Kaweesi 20, Rachael Orishaba 22 and Joseph Luswata 32 guilty of aggravated robbery and sent them to Luzira prison to serve a 17 year sentence.

According to the prosecutor Amina Namara, "the three convicts and others still at large on February 14th in 2016 at Bbunga, Makindye Division in Kampala District robbed David Ssengoba a Boda Boda rider off his motor cycle Bajaj Boxer UEJ 262 valued at Shs 4.2 million after feeding him with food laced with chloroform.

Evidence further shows that Ssengoba was hired by Rachael Orishaba from Bwaise to a certain pub in Bbunga where they met Joweria Kaweesi and gave him food.

The defence lawyer Ssali Ssenkezi requested court to offer them a light punishment of at least eight years saying that the period of three years that they have spent in Luzira on remand has reformed them.

"It's my prayer that court gives a simple punishment of eight years imprisonment to the offenders since they have spent more than three year on remand at Luzira," Ssali requested.

While delivering the judgment, Justice Wilson Kwesigwa found them guilty of aggravated robbery and sentenced to them to 17 years saying this should serve as a warning to the public who intend to engage in acts of robbery.

Evidence provided in court showed that this was not the first time the two ladies were being convicted of the same crime.
