Local council chairpersons at village and parish level from within the five divisions that make up Kampala district want KCCA to pay them Shs 4 million per month because they reportedly do a lot of work.

They made the demand in a meeting with Beti Kamya, the minister for Kampala yesterday.

According to the Chairperson LC II Nakasero Parish, Nasul Habib Rwamagana, the local chairpersons at village and parish level are under paid compared to KCCA councillors yet they work for 24 hours a day.

“Parliament recommended that we should be given a monthly payment of Shs 10,000 but this money is so little and since we started work we have not received the money," said Rwamagana.

Rwamagana said if the councillors who just sit in meetings are paid Shs 3 million per month, the LC I chairpersons deserve more.

Asked why they were asking for a monthly salary yet the state of security in their areas is in a bad shape, the LCs blamed security operatives for failing to work closely with them who are well conversant with the residents.

Kamya, the minister for Kampala said she will look at the demands and find a way forward.

"I have looked through your petition read by Rwamagana and I have heard every issue that you have put across. I promise to share it with other government sectors concerned," Kamya said.

Kamya also revealed a plan to register all Kampala residents with a view of knowing their number in order to give them better services.
