The Uganda Communications Commission has said that it will issue a directive to all telecom companies to provide services supporting the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
This has come after a study done the body revealed that the usage and access to ICT services by PWDs is still very low.
The details of the study indicate that only 17 percent of the PWD’S use smart phones while 82 percent use feature phones, 70 percent own a radio while 3.9 percent own a laptop.
Buwembo Murshid a 40 year-old disabled person said that sometimes he presses a number a number but instead something comes up.
He said the telecom companies have not helped them to access to the services.
This aside Buwembo cites the expensive nature of some of the technologies that could have assisted PWDs.
Kayinga Muhamadi a marketing manager of one the companies supplying assistive technologies, said the technology cannot be cheap because they import it expensively.
Fred Otunnu, the corporate Communications Officer at UCC said the body is yet to come in to enforce some of the key aspects of PWDs access to some of the technologies.
"We want everyone included when it comes to communication," Otunnu said.
