KAMPALA — The Court of Appeal has commenced a three-day civil session in Kampala during which it will hear 34 civil appeals as part of ongoing efforts to reduce case backlog and improve access to justice.
The session, which opened on Monday, July 27, will run until Thursday, July 30. Matters that had been scheduled for Tuesday have been adjourned to Friday, July 31, because Tuesday is a public holiday.
The session is being presided over by a panel comprising Lady Justice Irene Mulyagonja, Justice Mike Musisi and Lady Justice Esta Nambayo.
According to the cause list signed by Deputy Registrar Janeva Natukunda, the court will hear a broad range of civil matters.
The cases include disputes relating to land, claims for damages, divorce, breach of contract, compensation, unlawful publication, taxation and defamation.
"This includes land, claims for damages, divorce, breach of contract, compensation, unlawful publication of news, taxation and defamation," Natukunda said.
The court will also hear an election petition appeal filed by Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola against Faridah Nambi.
Nalukoola is challenging a High Court decision that nullified his election as Member of Parliament for Kawempe North following the 2025 parliamentary by-election.
Appellants and their legal representatives were present in court as the session got underway.
The Judiciary said the session forms part of its continued efforts to expedite the disposal of pending cases, reduce case backlog and enhance access to justice.
