The Electoral Commission (EC) has directed all candidates contesting in the Local Council (LC) elections to end their campaigns by 6:00pm today, warning that no candidate, agent or supporter will be allowed to campaign beyond the deadline ahead of Tuesday’s village polls.
EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi urged candidates, their supporters and agents to comply with electoral laws and campaign guidelines as campaigns draw to a close.
“Campaigns by all candidates contesting for Local Council positions across the country conclude today, Monday, July 27, 2026. No candidate, no agent and no supporter is expected to campaign beyond 6:00pm today. Please take this as a very serious matter,” Mucunguzi said.
The Commission also reminded candidates that campaigns are prohibited in schools, hospitals and markets, and must only be conducted within the villages where candidates are registered to contest.
“No candidate is expected or allowed to have campaign processions outside the village within which that person is contesting. We do not want to see candidates from one village going into another village,” he said.
Mucunguzi appealed to candidates and voters to maintain peace and avoid violence, saying political differences should not result in clashes.
“Keep peace. Do not clash and do not involve yourselves in any violent acts because this is merely a campaign process to elect leaders at the village level. Differences in the candidates that voters support should not become grounds for conflict,” he said.
The Commission also urged all registered voters to turn up early for the LC1 elections on Tuesday, July 28, thanking the government for declaring the day a public holiday to enable citizens to participate.
“We call upon all registered voters across the country to wake up early tomorrow and go to their respective villages to elect their LC1 chairpersons and village committees. Take this exercise as a serious matter because it is important in constituting leadership at the grassroots level,” Mucunguzi said.
Ugandans will head to the polls on Tuesday to elect LC1 chairpersons and village committees in villages across the country.
