Parliament’s designated parking spaces for Members of Parliament are set to be restored to their original purpose following a directive issued by Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth Oboth after concerns were raised over their conversion into storage areas.
The directive was issued during a plenary sitting after Kalungu West MP Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu informed the House that several parking spaces allocated to legislators had been turned into storage facilities.
“Some areas meant for MPs’ parking have been converted into storage spaces,” Ssewungu told Parliament.
The legislator said the change had created unnecessary inconvenience for Members of Parliament, who now struggle to find parking within the parliamentary precincts.
Responding to the concerns, Speaker Oboth Oboth directed the Clerk to Parliament to take immediate action and ensure the designated parking spaces are restored to their intended use.
“Let’s go back to what those parking spaces were meant for,” Speaker Oboth Oboth said.
The Speaker emphasized that the parking bays were specifically allocated to facilitate easy access for Members of Parliament and should not be repurposed for storage or any other function.
Following the directive, parliamentary staff have been instructed to vacate the affected parking bays and relocate any stored items to other approved storage facilities within the parliamentary premises.
Several legislators welcomed the Speaker’s intervention, saying restoring the designated parking spaces will ease congestion, improve access to Parliament, and enhance security within the parliamentary precincts.
