Kisoro Municipality has restored non-functional street lights and installed new ones across the town as authorities step up efforts to improve security and beautify the urban area.
For years, some parts of the municipality have remained without proper lighting, a situation residents say has increased vulnerability to crime, especially at night.
Residents have reported attacks by criminals armed with sticks, stones, knives, iron bars and pangas, who allegedly target pedestrians and demand money, commonly referred to as “balance”. Those who resist are often assaulted.
Municipal authorities say the renewed street lighting programme will help address such incidents while improving safety for residents and businesses.
Kisoro Municipal Town Clerk Richard Mugisha said the council prioritised street lighting before encouraging property owners to install additional security lights around their buildings.
"The municipality has installed more than eight new street lights and repaired 24 others in different areas. More lights are being imported from China to cover remaining dark spots and further boost security," Mugisha said.
He urged owners of buildings, especially those along major streets, to install security lights to complement the municipality’s efforts.
Mugisha also called on residents to help protect the street lights and report cases of vandalism or faults.
"I urge residents near street lights to monitor them and report faults. The contractor must ensure lights stay on from evening to morning, and any failure should be reported to the Town Clerk, Mayor, or other municipal officials for immediate action," he said.
The municipality says the continued expansion of street lighting will not only improve security but also contribute to the appearance and functionality of Kisoro town.
