UPDF Commander Kayanja Urges Discipline in Somalia Peacekeeping Mission

The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) Sector One Commander serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, has urged officers and troops to uphold conscious discipline as the foundation of professionalism, mission success and career development.

He made the remarks while addressing officers and troops at the Sector One Headquarters in Mogadishu, where he encouraged them to maintain high standards of discipline throughout their service under the African Union mission.

Brig Gen Kayanja emphasised that discipline remains essential not only for mission accomplishment but also for personal growth and future career progression, urging the personnel to avoid habits that could undermine their values.

"Discipline is the key to our lives, our success and our career progression. You, the young people, still have a bright future ahead of you. Therefore, desist from habits that undermine your values," he said.

Brig Gen Kayanja further encouraged the troops to continue safeguarding Uganda's good reputation while serving under the African Union mandate in Somalia, noting that their contribution supports regional peace and stability while advancing the Pan-African agenda.

Brig Gen Kayanja also underscored the importance of integrity and exemplary conduct, quoting the Bible, saying, "A good name is better than expensive perfume."

The Deputy Contingent Commander, Colonel Jude Rukubya, emphasised teamwork, unity and mutual respect as critical to achieving the mission's objectives.

"We continue to work together with the Somali National Army as one team, while respecting the Somali civilian community and their culture," he said.

Col Rukubya urged the officers and troops to continue working closely with the Somali National Army in the execution of the mission while maintaining respect for the Somali civilian population and their culture.

The meeting was attended by senior and junior officers serving under the UPDF contingent in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia.
