UEDCL Commissions New Maya Integration Lines to Boost Power Reliability Along Masaka Road Corridor

Electricity consumers along the Masaka Road corridor are set to benefit from improved and more reliable power supply effective immediately following the commissioning of new integration power lines by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL).

The integration lines evacuate power from the new Maya 220kV/132kV/33kV Substation constructed by the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), UEDCL’s bulk power supplier and supply the Mitala Maria and Mutundwe- 1 33kV feeders.

Areas set to benefit from this intervention include Nsangi, Nabbingo, Namagoma, Nakitokolo, Kitemu, Maya, Nakirebe, Katende, Lungala, Mpigi, Mpambire, Kamengo, Butoolo Landing Site, Kampiringisa, Buwama, Nsamizi and Mitala Maria.

Speaking during the commissioning of the Project, Eng. Samson Tondo, UEDCL’s Head of Regional Engineering Services, Central Service Territory, said the intervention followed a network assessment that identified the need for a new substation.

The substation was subsequently constructed by UETCL and commissioned in April 2026.

“Customers along the Masaka Road corridor were previously served by the Mutundwe Substation and experienced prolonged and frequent power outages. This was caused by growing electricity demand, which strained the substation,” he said.

“The integration lines evacuate power from the new Maya UETCL Substation to the existing distribution feeders, providing an alternative power supply source to customers along Masaka Road. With immediate effect, these customers will experience improved and more reliable power supply”, he added.

Teddy Akeso, Area Manager, Mpigi, said that previously a single fault could trigger widespread outages across several areas.

“The new arrangement means that a fault on one section will no longer interrupt supply to all customers on the line”.

The commissioning marks the completion of phase one of the USD 63,133 Maya UETCL Integration Lines Project. Phase one involved the construction of approximately 1.83 kilometers of 33kV overhead power lines and the installation of a 33kV air-break switch between the two feeder links.

Phase Two of the project is still at the planning and approval stage and will focus on the integration of Kakiri, Mityana and Kasanje 33kV feeders from the Maya Substation.

The intervention is expected to greatly improve the quality of power supply, reduce outage duration and enhance customer satisfaction in the aforementioned areas.
