Retired Supreme Court Justice, Augustine Nshimye has died following a long illness linked to cancer, bringing an end to a career that spanned decades in both the legal and political arenas.
The Judiciary said in a statement that the Justice Nshimye died on Friday morning at his home in Kampala.
Judiciary spokesperson James Ereemye Mawanda said an official communication would be issued in due course.
Family sources indicated that Justice Nshimye had been unwell for some time and had recently returned home after receiving medical attention in hospital, where he continued to be cared for.
Justice Nshimye’s professional journey began in 1967 when he joined public service as a clerk. Over the years, he advanced through various administrative and legal roles, including serving as Deputy Chief Registrar in the late 1980s before moving into private legal practice.
He later transitioned to the bench, and in 2008, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal, which also functions as the Constitutional Court.
His rise continued in 2010 when he joined the Supreme Court of Uganda in an acting capacity.
In 2015, he secured a full appointment to the Supreme Court, where he served until stepping down in March 2017 after reaching the retirement age. Even after retirement, he was called back to serve temporarily for two more years, reflecting the trust placed in his experience.
Outside the judiciary, Nshimye also had a notable political career. He represented Mityana South in Parliament for two decades, from 1988 to 2008, and served in government as Minister for Regional Cooperation.
His passing marks the loss of a seasoned legal mind and public servant whose work left a lasting imprint on Uganda’s justice system and governance.
Burial arrangements will be announced at a later date.
