Reckless Overtaking Suspected in Luweero Highway Crash That Killed Three
A late-night collision between a taxi and a lorry along the Kampala–Gulu Highway in Luweero District has left three passengers dead and eight others injured, with police pointing to dangerous overtaking as a possible cause.

Police in Luweero District are investigating a fatal road crash that left three people dead and eight others injured along the busy Kampala–Gulu Highway.

The accident occurred on March 20, 2026, at around 11:30 p.m. in Nkonde Village, Nyimbwa Sub-county. It involved a white Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UBR 333S, and a white Tata lorry, registration number UBG 873K, both driven by yet-to-be-identified drivers.

According to police, all the victims were passengers in the Toyota Hiace, which was traveling from Kampala to Amolatar District. Three unidentified male passengers died on the spot, while eight others sustained injuries.

“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding this fatal crash that claimed three lives and left eight others injured,” said ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Region Police spokesperson.

Police reports indicate that the Tata lorry, which was transporting poles and heading toward Kampala, attempted to overtake a long queue of vehicles at Nkonde.

“The driver of the lorry tried to overtake a line of vehicles, leading to a head-on collision with the oncoming taxi,” Twiineamazima said.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. The injured victims were rushed to Mulago Hospital and Kasana Luweero Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Luweero Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.

“We urge all road users to exercise caution, especially during overtaking, and to strictly follow traffic rules to avoid such tragic incidents,” Twiineamazima added.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing as police work to establish further details surrounding the incident.
