The long-serving chairperson of Lwempaama Village in Lwengo District has resigned just days before the Local Council I (LC I) elections, citing growing security concerns after serving the community for about 40 years.
Vincent Bingo announced his resignation, saying he had decided to step aside to protect his life and allow another leader to take over.
Bingo, who was found at his home surrounded by residents providing him with security, said the decision followed a series of threats and increasing insecurity.
He said his resignation was not because he had been unopposed in the NRM village primaries but was driven solely by concerns for his personal safety.
"Although I was not challenged in the primaries, that does not mean I should ignore the threats I have been receiving. I no longer have the village stamp because it was taken away by the sub-county authorities, and since then I have faced intimidation," Bingo said.
He claimed unknown vehicles had been trailing him, forcing him to seek protection from members of the community.
"I have people guarding me because I fear for my safety. This is why I have decided to step aside from this position," he said.
Bingo apologised to residents who had planned to vote for him and urged them to support David Muhereza, whom he described as capable of leading the village.
"I request my supporters to give their votes to David Muhereza because I have seen leadership qualities in him and I believe he can serve the people well," he said.
Following the announcement, Muhereza, popularly known as Light Pink, intensified his campaign, moving door to door to canvass support ahead of the polls.
"I call upon all voters to come out and vote on the scheduled election day so that we can choose the leadership our village needs," Muhereza said.
Residents expressed concern over the developments, saying the uncertainty had disrupted peace in the village and prompted some people to leave their homes.
Some described Bingo's decision to withdraw at the last minute as shocking, noting that he had served the community faithfully for many years.
Following his withdrawal, the LC I race in Lwempaama Village will be contested by David Muhereza and Hamza Kasozi.
Voting is scheduled for Tuesday.
