The government has issued a security advisory to its citizens in Iran following escalating military tensions in the Middle East, urging caution and recommending evacuation where possible.
In a notice dated February 28, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring the unfolding situation.
“The Government of Uganda is monitoring the situation in the Middle East with grave concern,” said Ministry Permanent Secretary Vincent Bagiire.
The advisory comes as reports indicate coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on multiple Iranian targets, including sites in Tehran, with Iran responding through missile and drone attacks across the region. Explosions and airspace closures have disrupted civilian travel, raising fears of wider regional instability.
“The Government of Uganda calls on all parties to exercise restraint, prioritize dialogue, and refrain from any further escalation,” Bagiire said, emphasizing the need for diplomatic engagement.
Ugandan nationals in Iran have been urged to prioritize their safety. Those who can leave are encouraged to do so immediately.
“In light of the escalating security situation, all Ugandan citizens in the territory of Iran, who can, are advised to take serious precautions for their safety and leave Iran through any possible means,” the ministry noted.
The government has also scaled down its diplomatic presence in Tehran. “The Government of Uganda has taken the decision to withdraw all non-essential staff from the Embassy in Tehran for their safety. Consular services are severely limited for the time being as alternative arrangements are put in place,” Bagiire added.
Ugandans remaining in Iran are urged to stay indoors, maintain communication with community leaders, and monitor media reports.
“Ugandans who are staying in the country are urged to alert community leaders of their whereabouts, stay indoors and monitor media for developments. Information about evacuations will be limited until the situation normalizes,” the ministry stated.
The advisory also extends to those planning travel to the broader Middle East.
"Due to the extremely fluid situation that is affecting international travel, all Ugandan citizens are strongly advised to suspend travel to the Middle East until further notice,” Bagiire said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs pledged to provide updates as the situation develops.
