Dr Frank R. Asiimwe has been elected President of the Uganda Medical Association (UMA), the national body representing medical doctors and advocating for improved healthcare standards across the country.
A highly respected surgeon and urologist, Dr Asiimwe assumes the role with a distinguished record in clinical practice, health leadership and medical education.
His election has been widely welcomed within the medical fraternity, with colleagues citing his deep experience, reform-oriented mindset and long-standing commitment to strengthening Uganda’s healthcare system.
Dr Asiimwe’s professional journey reflects broad expertise supported by extensive academic and clinical credentials. He holds: MBChB; PG Dip HA; MMED Surg; FRCOG (Founder Fellow Fistula); MSc Urol; FCS (ECSA) Urol; and a Fellowship in Advanced Urology & Renal Transplant Surgery.
He serves as a Consultant Urologist, Consultant General Surgeon and Consultant Fistula Surgeon — a rare combination that underscores his versatility and clinical excellence.
At Mulago National Referral Hospital, Dr Asiimwe is the Chair of Urology & Organ Transplant, where he has played a key role in advancing renal transplant services and expanding access to specialised urologic care.
Beyond clinical practice, he contributes significantly to surgical education. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery (Honorary) at King Ceasor University and the Director of FCS (ECSA) Urology Training, supporting the development of urological specialists across East, Central and Southern Africa.
Dr Asiimwe has also served in several leadership positions within professional and sectoral bodies, including:

- Past President, Association of Surgeons of Uganda
