The Judicial Training Institute (JTI) has brought together senior judicial officers, electoral law experts, and facilitators to finalize preparations for a national training on the resolution of election disputes for judicial officers, scheduled from December 3 to 5, 2025.
In his virtual address, Justice Mike Chibita, Chairperson of the JTI Governing Council, praised the trainers’ dedication and highlighted the critical role of their expertise in ensuring the training is delivered professionally and practically.
“The Manual has been piloted during the Chief Magistrates’ training on vote recounts, and the feedback received has informed substantial improvements,” Justice Chibita said.
“Clearly defining the roles of faculty members will ensure coherent and effective delivery during the upcoming sessions.”
JTI Executive Director, Justice Prof. Andrew Khaukha, welcomed the facilitators and emphasized the importance of harmonizing the programme.
“This planning meeting allows us to strengthen coordination and ensure that High Court Judges receive training aligned with the Judiciary’s objective of credible, consistent, and timely adjudication of electoral disputes,” he said.
The trainers reviewed the draft programme, which covers Uganda’s constitutional and legal framework on elections, petition filing procedures, evidentiary standards, and best practices for impartial and expeditious resolution of disputes.
The meeting was chaired by Justice John Eudes Keitirima, Head of the High Court’s Family Division, and facilitated by Counsel Jude Byamukama.
Participants included Justices Phillip Odoki, Boniface Wamala, Christine Kaahwa, and Patricia Basaza Wasswa; representatives from the Electoral Commission; former Solicitor General Francis Atoke; and several magistrates and legal practitioners.
The national training aims to bolster judicial preparedness and ensure that Uganda’s courts are equipped to manage election-related cases efficiently as the country approaches the 2026 electoral season.
