The Kigezi region—comprising Kabale, Kisoro, Rukungiri, Rukiga, Rubanda and Kanungu—was selected to host the celebrations because of its historical significance in the liberation struggle and its long-standing political stability.

According to UPDF Joint Staff and Political Commissar, Brig Gen Henry Masiko, many fighters lost their lives in the area, making it a symbolic choice for this year’s celebrations.

To avoid interfering with the Electoral Commission’s road map ahead of the 2026 elections, the UPDF announced that community activities will commence earlier than usual, starting December this year.

Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Samuel Okiding, who represented the Chief of Defence Forces, says this year’s theme“Defending the gains of the revolution and honouring the sacrifice of the freedom fighters: A call for national unity, peace and socio-economic transformation”reflects the foundation on which Uganda’s progress is built.

“We are protecting the gains of the revolution. It is our role to preach the gospel so that people who don’t see the gains begin to see them,” Okiding said.

The UPDF also outlined several quick-impact community projects that will be implemented across the six districts. These include construction of market stalls, rehabilitation of recreation grounds, and repairs on selected school buildings.

The 45th Tarehe Sita Anniversary will officially be marked on February 6, 2026.
