The Opposition Caucus in Parliament, led by Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, held a closed-door meeting on Wednesday to deliberate on several national issues, including the arrest of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago by security forces.
Following the meeting, Opposition Members of Parliament addressed the media and condemned what they described as continued intimidation, harassment and unlawful arrests allegedly linked to the Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Ssenyonyi said the conduct of some security officers was creating fear among citizens and urged Ugandans to speak out against what he termed abuses, regardless of their political affiliations.
“In spite of instigating fear amongst citizens by the CDF, all Ugandans regardless of their political affiliations must come out and speak out against the ill actions and atrocities being committed by the UPDF,” Ssenyonyi said.
“No one is now safe in Uganda.”
The Opposition leader also questioned the circumstances under which Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa were reportedly appointed by Gen. Muhoozi as his “special envoys in Parliament”.
Ssenyonyi revealed that he had written to the Speaker requesting an urgent recall of Parliament to discuss what he described as the “ongoing ill behaviours” of some officers of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) and the broader security situation in the country.
The Opposition Caucus also renewed calls for legal action against former Speaker Anita Among over allegations of corruption linked to Parliament.
“The Opposition also wants the former Speaker Anita Among arraigned in a court of law on cases related to the alleged corruption in Parliament,” Ssenyonyi said.
The developments come amid heightened political debate over the role of security agencies in civic and political affairs, with Opposition leaders increasingly raising concerns about arrests, detentions and the treatment of political actors ahead of the country's next electoral cycle.
