The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has hailed the late Brig Gen (Rtd) Ali Nasuru Izaga as a cornerstone of peace and stability in Uganda, particularly within the West Nile region.
Gen Muhoozi’s message, delivered by Maj Gen Dick Olum, chairman of the Security Supervisory Mechanism in South Sudan, was read at the burial ceremony held in Jabala Village, Gojuru Parish, Kuru Subcounty, Aringa County, Yumbe District.
“We join the family, relatives and friends at this difficult moment to mourn a comrade whom we shall always remember,” Gen Muhoozi said.
He described Brig Izaga as “a historical leader whose dedication, discipline and resilience earned him tremendous respect from senior commanders, colleagues and junior officers.”
Brig Gen (Rtd) Ali Nasuru Izaga joined the Uganda Army on January 1, 1961, serving in multiple command and staff positions over a distinguished career.
Mourners praised his humility, kindness, and generosity, qualities that helped shape a generation of peace-builders in the region.
Speaking on behalf of the family, his son Apangu Ali expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Gen Muhoozi for their support of Brig Izaga during his service and to the family after his passing.
Representing family friends, Gen (Rtd) Kale Kayihura noted that Brig Izaga’s legacy would continue to influence communities across West Nile and beyond.
“He mentored many young people who have since taken up responsibilities both within and outside the force,” Gen Kayihura said.
The burial ceremony drew a large attendance, including UPDF generals and senior officers, Members of Parliament, clergy, cultural and political leaders, and hundreds of community members, all gathered to honour the life and service of the late Brig Gen Izaga.
