The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has released the shortlist of successful applicants for the ongoing General Recruitment Exercise 2026, paving the way for the next stage of the nationwide recruitment process.
In a statement dated July 7, 2026, and signed by the Acting Director of Defence Public Information (DDPI), Colonel Chris Magezi, the military announced that shortlisted candidates can now verify their status through the official UPDF website and at their respective City and District Headquarters.
“The shortlist of successful candidates for the ongoing General Recruitment Exercise 2026 has been released,” the statement read.
According to the UPDF, successful applicants will proceed to Phase Three of the exercise, the physical recruitment stage, which will be conducted in their respective Cities and Districts. The force said the specific dates and schedules for the exercise will be communicated through its official channels.
Candidates have been advised to prepare the required documents in advance, including a handwritten application bearing recommendations from LC I, LC II, LC III and the GISO or DISO, their original National Identity Card or National Identification Number (NIN), original and photocopies of academic documents, with graduate qualifications certified, and three coloured passport-size photographs.
“To those shortlisted, congratulations. As you proceed to Phase Three (Physical Recruitment), which will commence soon at your respective Cities and Districts, kindly prepare the required documents and materials in advance,” the statement read.
The UPDF also expressed appreciation to applicants who were not shortlisted, saying their willingness to serve demonstrated commitment to national service.
“The UPDF extends sincere appreciation to all Ugandans who applied but did not make it to the shortlist. Your willingness to serve your country reflects patriotism and discipline, values the UPDF holds in the highest regard. We encourage you to continue preparing for future opportunities to serve,” the statement read.
The military reiterated that recruitment into the force remains free of charge and warned the public against fraudsters claiming to influence the recruitment process.
“Recruitment into the UPDF is free of charge. No agents or intermediaries are involved. Any cases of fraud must be reported immediately to the nearest Police Station, DISO’s office, or UPDF unit,” the statement read.
The announcement follows the UPDF’s earlier declaration of a nationwide recruitment exercise scheduled to take place across all districts of Uganda between July 20 and August 1, 2026, aimed at recruiting both regular military personnel and professionals in specialised fields.
The recruitment process began with an online application phase that ran from June 10 to June 24, 2026, through the UPDF recruitment portal, where applicants were required to submit their applications electronically within the specified period.
According to the UPDF, applicants were required to be Ugandan citizens possessing valid National Identity Cards and to meet prescribed standards of physical fitness, medical fitness, discipline and good conduct. They were also required to obtain recommendations from local leaders.
The military said district recruitment quotas would be based on figures from the Uganda National Population and Housing Census 2024 to ensure equitable representation across the country.
The recruitment targets a broad range of categories to strengthen both the force’s conventional military capability and specialised professional services.
Among those eligible are general recruits holding Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) qualifications aged between 18 and 22 years.
The UPDF is also recruiting Information and Communication Technology specialists with qualifications ranging from diplomas to master's degrees, as well as engineers and logistics professionals possessing certificates, diplomas or degrees and at least three years of relevant professional experience.
Additional vacancies are available for aviation professionals, including pilot instructors, pilots, aviation engineers, air traffic controllers and meteorologists.
The health sector recruitment covers medical specialists, medical officers, pharmacists, nurses and allied health professionals.
The force is further seeking legal practitioners with at least five years' experience as advocates, graduate teachers holding valid teacher registration certificates for both primary and secondary education, sports personnel, graduates in social sciences and psychology, as well as musicians with expertise in band performance and live musical production.
The UPDF previously encouraged qualified women to apply for the available professional positions.
The military also warned applicants against presenting forged academic or professional credentials, saying offenders would face criminal prosecution.
The UPDF further urged the public to disregard individuals claiming to offer recruitment assistance for money, maintaining that no agents or intermediaries have been authorised to conduct recruitment on its behalf.
The force reaffirmed that it remains committed to building a professional military anchored on its core values of discipline, patriotism and Pan-Africanism.
