Heavy Rains to Continue Until December

The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) has warned that heavy rains are expected to persist across the country until the beginning of December, raising concerns over flooding and potential disease outbreaks.

The central business district of Kampala and western Uganda are expected to receive particularly intense rainfall, while other regions, including eastern Uganda, the highlands of Rwenzori, southwestern Uganda, Mubende, and Mityana, have also been advised to remain vigilant.

Principal Meteorologist George William Omony said the prolonged rainfall could overwhelm drainage systems, leading to localized flooding and increased risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, and malaria.

“This kind of rainfall is always the most dangerous. We advise the public to remain alert, clear drainage systems, and avoid walking or driving through flooded areas,” Omony said.

Health authorities have previously recorded spikes in cholera and diarrhoeal diseases following heavy rainfall periods, often linked to contamination of water sources.

In addition, stagnant water from floods can provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes, exacerbating malaria transmission, particularly in low-lying and densely populated areas.

UNMA has urged local government leaders and community authorities to step up public awareness campaigns on preventive measures, including ensuring safe drinking water, proper sanitation, and hygiene practices during this rainy season.

Residents are also encouraged to avoid disposing of waste in drainage channels, to relocate valuables to higher ground, and to exercise caution when commuting during heavy storms.

Flooding is a recurring challenge during Uganda’s rainy seasons, with past incidents resulting in property damage, displacement, and, in severe cases, loss of life.

Climate experts warn that the frequency and intensity of rainfall events in Uganda are increasing, making preparedness measures increasingly critical.

UNMA continues to monitor weather developments and will issue further updates as the rainfall season progresses.

Residents are advised to stay tuned to official alerts and to take proactive measures to safeguard lives, property, and public health.
