The Deputy Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Rose Namayanja Nsereko has defended the nomination of President  Museveni as the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2026 general elections, highlighting both the achievements of the ruling party and new plans to tackle youth unemployment.

Speaking during NBS Barometer on Tuesday, Namayanja said President Museveni’s candidacy followed due process, noting that the Electoral Commission received over two million signatures from his supporters across the country.

“As the NRM, we have achieved gains such as peace and stability, which we must protect. Across the country, guns are silent, and this peace has facilitated development,” she added.

Looking ahead to the next term, Namayanja revealed that the party plans to establish a special fund targeting unemployed university graduates who have failed to secure jobs two years after graduation. The fund, she explained, would help beneficiaries create business ventures and contribute to the economy.

“In the next term, the NRM will establish a fund for university graduates who have been unemployed for two years, so that they can use it to start up ventures,” she said.

NRM Spokesperson Emmanuel Lumala Dombo, dismissed claims that President Museveni has clung to power unchallenged, pointing out that he has consistently faced opponents in competitive elections.

“Museveni was not given a 40-year term. He has contested in several elections against different opponents, some tightly contested, others less so, but Ugandans have continued to entrust him with leadership,” Dombo remarked.

The political talk show followed a massive show of support at Kololo Independence Grounds earlier in the day, where thousands of NRM supporters gathered to witness President Museveni’s official nomination by the Electoral Commission.

At 81 years old, President Museveni is seeking to extend his four-decade grip on power, having first assumed office on January 26th 1986.
