The National Unity Platform (NUP) Electoral Commission has acknowledged a surge in interest from all those seeking leadership positions under its flag, with over 50,000 individuals having submitted expressions of interest ahead of the 2026 general elections.
In a press briefing held at the party headquarters in Kavule, the NUP Electoral Commission appreciated the high turnout, describing it as a sign of growing confidence in the party’s democratic processes. However, the commission highlighted key challenges that have affected the vetting process.
One major hurdle, according to the party’s Electoral Commission, has been the lengthy and expensive process of verifying academic documents through the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).
“Many applicants faced delays and high costs in accessing their academic records. We believe this is a matter that needs urgent streamlining to support participation,” the EC stated.
The commission also noted that several aspiring candidates from upcountry areas were disadvantaged due to inadequate access to information. As a result, many have not completed documentation and are requesting more time to fulfill requirements.
While the exact number of vetted individuals is still being compiled, officials confirmed that the interest has far exceeded expectations. The committee is working around the clock to process all entries and verify documentation,” said the commission.
The party is now looking at a harmonisation process, especially in constituencies where there are many aspirants vying for a limited number of slots. “This is a delicate but necessary step to ensure fair representation while managing the overwhelming enthusiasm,” the EC added.
As the party moves to the next stage of assessments, vetting, and eventual selection of flag bearers, more detailed updates including final numbers are expected soon.
