The People's Front for Freedom (PFF), led by Erias Lukwago, has launched a nationwide signature collection campaign aimed at formalising its registration as a new political party.
The event took place at the Katonga Road offices, where Lukwago, interim President of the FDC Katonga faction and Lord Mayor of Kampala, outlined the campaign’s objectives and expectations.
Lukwago emphasised that the exercise is legally sanctioned, with the PFF having secured clearance from the Electoral Commission.
“We expect no interruption from any security agency, including police officers, RDCs, and other members of the security network,” he declared.
He assured that all necessary notifications to authorities have been made in compliance with the Commission’s requirements for party registration.
The initiative follows a resolution made during the FDC Delegates Conference, where members agreed to form a new political entity.
The PFF has adopted white and royal blue as its official colours and chosen a phone symbol to represent the party.
Lukwago clarified that the PFF’s mission is to collaborate with other groups to advance national liberation, not to compete within the political space.
“We are not here to compete for political space or power. We want to connect with other forces of change to liberate the country,” he said, inviting Ugandans to join the movement.
He described the PFF as a coalition of various political, civil society, and pressure groups united for peace and development.
The Electoral Commission recently approved the registration of the PFF following persistent efforts by the Katonga faction, a breakaway group from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
The faction has been advocating for the PFF's registration in anticipation of the 2026 general elections, positioning the party as an alternative platform for Ugandans dissatisfied with the current political climate.
Initially, the Commission had rejected the PFF's registration due to its similarity to the registered People Power Front (PPF) and concerns that the proposed blue color scheme resembled that of the FDC.
The Commission advised the PFF to modify its name and colors to prevent confusion with existing political entities.
However, the faction remained resolute and threatened legal action if their demands were not met.
After a series of intense discussions, a breakthrough was reached, and the Electoral Commission finalized its decision on Thursday last week, approving the PFF’s registration.
With the green light from the Commission, the PFF can now proceed with collecting signatures to formalize its registration.
The signatures will undergo a stringent verification process to ensure authenticity and prevent forgery.
