Several pupils of Kanyabikyere primary school in Kitagwenda District are learning under trees due to the lack of enough classrooms.

The pupils are mostly in lower primary classes P3 to P5 sit under the tree during the lessons due to inadequate classrooms at the school. The school has nearly 500 pupils and 8 teachers.

However, it has only four classrooms out of the seven that are needed although another classroom block that had been left uncompleted by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) under the Queen Elizabeth Protected Areas grant (QEPA) is being completed by the district with the School Renovation Grant (SRG) program.

The school only has 50 desks where each is occupied by 7 pupils and the rest sit on mats whereas others use stones and bricks as desks.

The head teacher of the school John Tumwijukye, says the lack of classrooms has been a very big challenge for the learners especially when it rains although parents have already made a supplementary budget of shs 2 million to add on the funds they received from government worth shs 10 million to renovate the one that was constructed by wildlife and do renovation of other other classrooms which are in a sorry state.

''some pupils study under trees because we have few classrooms. It is really a very big challenge to them whenever it rains’’, He lamented.

''However, in trying to solve the matter, parents tried to erect one building which is still under construction and we have already made a supplementary budget of shs 2 million to add to the renovation funds we received from the government to renovate other classrooms in a bad state’’, Tumwijukye added.

Tumwijukye adds that the school also lacks adequate latrines, noting that it only has a four stance latrine that was constructed by Rotary under the lobbying of Ephrance Kenyonyozi and it is both shared by teachers and pupils.

''We also lack enough latrines whereby the only 4 stance pit latrine in place is used by both teachers and pupils which is really not good’’, He added.

Kitagwenda’s District Education Officer, Sedas Asiimwe says that the department is working towards addressing such challenges in all the schools however, stressing that the work might take longer due to the available limited resource envelope.

''Majority of the schools are experiencing such related challenges and as the district we are trying to do our best to address them however, it might take us longer due to the limited resources’’, Asiimwe reacted.

The district has 69 government-aided primary schools with an enrolment of 35604 783 learners.
