The deceased has been identified as George Nsawa , a pupil at the school, located in Nakawa Division, Kampala.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire said the incident occurred on July 3, 2026, at around 2:00pm when special needs pupils were taken for swimming lessons at the school swimming pool.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the children continued swimming until about 4:00pm, when teachers began organizing some pupils to return to class, while others remained at the pool under supervision. It was during this time that Nsawa reportedly drowned in the swimming pool,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police said one of the teachers later raised alarm after discovering the incident, and the child was rushed to Iran Hospital for medical attention, where he was pronounced dead.
The matter was subsequently reported to police by the headteacher who was not present at the school at the time of the incident.
“We have since opened a death inquiry file and we have commenced investigations into possible negligence,” Owoyesigyire said.
He added that the scene was visited, examined and cordoned off by investigators while relevant statements have also been recorded.
The body of the deceased was retrieved from Iran Hospital and conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for post mortem examination.
“Inquiries are ongoing and more details will be communicated in due course,” Owoyesigyire said.
